What was once a sloping, waterlogged garden has been transformed into a modern outdoor space designed for everyday family life. By regrading the garden, improving drainage and introducing durable, low-maintenance materials, we created a garden that's ready to be enjoyed all year round by both the children and the family dog.
The Johnson family wanted to make better use of their back garden, but the existing space presented several challenges.
The garden sat on a noticeable slope, making it difficult to use effectively, while heavy clay soil caused poor drainage, leaving large areas waterlogged after rainfall. This meant the family could only enjoy the garden during dry weather, and muddy conditions made it less than ideal for young children and their dog.
Their brief was simple:

To unlock the full potential of the garden, we first reconfigured the levels by constructing a retaining wall, creating a large, flat area that dramatically increased the usable outdoor space.
Large-format grey porcelain paving was selected to provide a contemporary finish, extending seamlessly across the main patio, pathways and dedicated seating area to create a cohesive design throughout the garden.
For the lawn, the family chose premium artificial grass—an ideal solution for a busy household with young children and a dog. Not only does it provide a clean, attractive lawn all year round, but it also eliminates muddy footprints, requires virtually no maintenance and stays usable whatever the weather.
By addressing both the drainage issues and the changing levels, we transformed what had been a difficult garden into a practical outdoor living space built around the family’s lifestyle.

The Result
The Johnson family now has a garden that's as practical as it is attractive. The newly levelled layout provides significantly more usable space for relaxing, entertaining and family time, while the porcelain paving creates a clean, contemporary appearance that complements the property. Perhaps the biggest transformation has been the artificial grass. With no mud, no mowing and no waterlogged lawn, the children and family dog can enjoy the garden throughout the year.
