Mature planting had taken over, the layout lacked purpose and there was nowhere for the family to relax, entertain or play. Our brief was to completely reimagine the garden, creating a modern, low-maintenance outdoor space that would work for the whole family while respecting the character of the mature trees and established boundaries.

Hayley wanted a garden that would become an extension of the family home rather than an area to look at through the window.

The priorities were clear:

  • Create a low-maintenance garden.
  • Provide a safe space for children to play.
  • Include dedicated seating and dining areas.
  • Make the garden dog friendly.
  • Transform an unused space into somewhere the family would enjoy every day.

The existing garden already had one huge asset—its mature trees and established planting. Rather than stripping everything back, we worked with these natural features to create structure, privacy and character.

A flowing sandstone pathway guides you through the garden, passing beneath the beautiful mature weeping tree before opening onto a spacious patio designed for outdoor dining and entertaining.
Large areas of lawn provide a generous play space for children and pets, while low-maintenance gravel borders and barked woodland areas reduce ongoing upkeep and frame the garden naturally.

Every part of the design has a purpose, creating separate spaces while maintaining an open, connected feel throughout.

What Our Client Said

“Choosing a landscaper for a garden you want to complete your home can be difficult, as there are so many companies, ideas and quotes to choose from. However, Stephen and Oliver made everything so easy, personal, simple and professional.

From our very first meeting I knew they would be brilliant. Communication was excellent, their ideas, designs and work ethic were amazing. They listened to exactly what we needed, shared their ideas and worked with us to create the perfect garden.

Nothing was ever a problem, and any changes along the way were dealt with quickly and professionally. They have transformed our garden from an overgrown, wasted space that we couldn’t use into something spacious, modern and child friendly. We absolutely love it and now spend so much more time outside. It’s easy to maintain and we’re thrilled with the result.

We would 100% recommend Stephen Oliver to anyone.”— Hayley Walton

The Result

The transformation is remarkable.
What was once an overgrown and largely unusable garden is now a bright, open and welcoming family space that encourages people outdoors. Children have room to play safely, adults have dedicated areas for relaxing and dining, and the mature landscape has been preserved to provide beauty, shade and privacy. Most importantly, the garden is now used every day rather than being an area that was simply maintained from time to time.

Stephen’s Design Insight

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming an overgrown garden needs to be cleared completely before it can become functional. In this project, the mature trees became one of the garden’s greatest features.
By opening up the layout around them and introducing purposeful destinations, we created a garden with maturity, character and a sense of journey that would have taken years to recreate from scratch. Great garden design isn’t about removing everything—it’s about recognising what should stay and designing around it.
